Abstract




The objective of this study was to evaluate the perception of parents on food health and child nutrition in the population of children between 2 and 5 years of age in Sabanilla, Ecuador. Surveys and interviews were conducted with a representative sample of parents of children in this age group, and the results were compared with previous national and international research.


The findings revealed that most parents presented deficiencies in knowledge about child feeding and inadequate feeding practices at home. In addition, it was identified that the educational level of parents influences their perception of child food health and nutrition.


Among the barriers identified to improve child nutrition were lack of access to healthy foods, economic constraints and lack of time. However, opportunities were also identified, such as the existence of educational programs and the availability of fresh food in the community.


The research concludes that there is a need to implement comprehensive strategies that address knowledge gaps, promoting the adoption of healthy food practices. In addition, it is critical to address economic barriers and improve access to nutritious foods. Collaboration between educational institutions, health professionals and local authorities is key to achieve significant progress in promoting healthy eating in the child population of the Sabanilla precinct.
