Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a significant public health concern, particularly among key populations such as sex workers. This study analyzes the prevalence and trends of STIs among sex workers in Riobamba, Ecuador,
by comparing historical data from 2008 with recent national and international evidence. A retrospective, descriptive, and comparative study was conducted,
analyzing 511 records of sex workers from two periods in 2008. These data were contrasted with scientific literature and official reports published between 2020 and 2024, using descriptive statistics and comparative epidemiological analy-
sis. The results showed that in 2008, the prevalence of HIV was 1.26%, while syphilis prevalence was 3.2%. Consistent condom use with clients exceeded 75%, whereas it was only 3% with stable partners. In contrast, recent data from the Ministry of Public Health and UNAIDS estimate a national HIV prevalence among sex workers between 0.5% and 1.1%, along with improved screening
coverage and better access to healthcare services. Condom use with clients remains high (>85%); however, risk behaviors persist in personal relationships. In conclusion, despite improvements in access to diagnosis and prevention,
significant gaps remain in the intimate context of sex workers, highlighting the need for targeted and sustained interventions.
