Parent-child Relationship and its Effect on Emotional Regulation in 5-year-old Children

Abstract

The parent-child relationship plays a fundamental role in children's lives and their effect on emotional regulation. The main objective of the research is to analyze the parent-child relationship and its impact on emotional regulation in 5-year-old children, applying a quantitative approach through questionnaires directed at parents and an emotional regulation scale for students, which allowed for the collection of data on parental perception of the relationship and the level of child self-regulation. The results show that parents perceive themselves at a high level, ranging from 78.26% to 88%, while children present a medium level, where the most frequent response ranges from 60% to 73%. This data allowed for the verification of the three proposed hypotheses related to affection, affective interaction, and significant differences in emotional development. Finally, an educational proposal was designed to strengthen emotional development from the home aims to foster the development of parental competencies to understand the importance of being present in the educational process. It is concluded that the active presence of parents is important, as correlations showed that a positive emotional bond promotes self-esteem, security, secure attachment, emotional bonding, parenting styles, and their positive effect on emotional regulation in 5-year-old children
