Abstract
Digital transformation represents one of the most significant processes for higher education institutions (HEIs) in the era of artificial intelligence. This study analyzes digital transformation strategies applicable to Ecuadorian HEIs through a systematic literature review of scientific publications from 2020 to 2026, following the PRISMA 2020 protocol. The search was conducted in Scopus, SciELO, and Dialnet databases, resulting in the selection of 52 peer-reviewed articles. The findings reveal that digital transformation in Ecuadorian universities has developed around five strategic dimensions: artificial intelligence, digital competencies, digital governance, educational innovation, and digital inclusion. Artificial intelligence represents the most prevalent category (26.9%), followed by teaching digital competencies (19.2%) and institutional governance and innovation (15.4%). Temporal analysis shows a growing trend in scientific output, peaking in 2025, reflecting a transition from reactive virtualization approaches toward more complex models associated with Education 4.0. Strategies are proposed to strengthen digital competencies, promote the ethical integration of artificial intelligence, modernize technological infrastructure, advance institutional digital governance, and foster pedagogical innovation. It is concluded that the sustainable progress of Ecuadorian HEIs toward more resilient university models requires a strategic vision grounded in principles of equity, ethics, and social responsibility.
