Exploring the impact of the metaverse and artificial intelligence on higher education

Abstract
This multidisciplinary research investigates the impact of the Metaverse and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on higher education, with a focus on the University of Guayaquil. The methodology integrates qualitative and quantitative approaches, utilizing surveys and interviews with students and experts. Among the 2000 analyzed students, 85% demonstrate familiarity with the Metaverse, and 70% recognize its potential to enhance education. Concerning AI, 50% perceive a positive influence on academic performance, while 85% support the adoption of more AI-based technologies. Expert interviews underscore the need for planning and training for the effective integration of the Metaverse, balancing AI usage with the development of human skills. Quantitative analysis reveals positive correlations between Metaverse usage, familiarity with AI, and a willingness to adopt AI-based technologies.
Early acceptance of the Metaverse, mixed perceptions about AI, and a strong demand for more AI-based technologies emphasize key areas for future research and implementation strategies. The necessity for strategic implementation, careful planning, and training resonates among the results and perspectives of experts. This study provides an informed and strategic foundation for addressing technological evolution in higher education, emphasizing the importance of addressing raised concerns and carefully considering the implementation of these technologies to maximize their positive impact.
